Day 1
Depart USA.
Your fascinating voyage to Scandinavia begins as you depart New York this evening on your overnight flight.
Day 2
Arrive Stockholm (Sweden).
This morning arrive in Stockholm, the beautiful capital of Sweden that was founded in the 13th century and built on fourteen islands that are connected by dozens of bridges. You’ll embark on a guided tour to see the Town Hall where the Nobel Prize banquets are held as well as Gamla Stan, the fascinating medieval old town where the Royal Palace, Parliament and Riddarholm Church are located. Day 3
Stockholm.
Today is at leisure to enjoy beautiful Stockholm at your own pace. Explore the narrow streets of Gamla Stan or visit the Vasa Museum, where you may view the restored warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628. Your hotel is ideally located for independent exploration. (B)
Day 4
Stockholm/Bergen (Norway).
This morning embark on a short flight to Bergen, the capital of Norway’s majestic fjord region. Join your tour director for a walk from your harbor side hotel to the colorful open-air fish and flower market and to the lively 14th century merchant quarter of Bryggen. Later, enjoy some leisure time to explore this 900 year old Hanseatic town independently. Radisson Blu Royal Hotel (B)
Day 5
Bergen/Flam/Lofthus: “Norway in a Nutshell”.
Over the next few days venture into the heart of Norway’s Fjord region and admire some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery. A day of scenic splendors begins with a drive to Voss where you’ll embark on an express train to Myrdal. Here board the world famous Flam Mountain Railway for an hour-long thrilling ride descending 2,600 feet and passing through 20 tunnels, thundering waterfalls and towering mountains en route to the quaint village of Flam. Next, enjoy a delightful leisurely cruise through majestic Sognefjord and its smaller arms and admire the grandeur of the sheer cliffs that flank the fjord. Disembark in Gudvangen where you’ll rejoin your motor coach and drive through the bends of the Stalheim Canyon to Lofthus, an enchanting village on the shores of Hardangerfjord, Norway’s second largest fjord. Day 6
Hardangerfjord.
Lofthus is located on the shores of the Hardangerfjord, in a region that is blessed with stunning natural beauty and is surrounded by snowcapped mountains. The area is abundant with pristine fjords and fertile land that is home to many fruit orchards. The day is at leisure to explore at your own pace from your ideally located resort hotel. (B,D)
Day 7
Lofthus/Oslo.
Today journey though Norway’s scenic countryside with a stop to view the mighty Voeringfoss Waterfall cascading 600ft. Later arrive in Oslo where you’ll enjoy a guided tour of this old Viking capital. You’ll visit Vigeland Sculpture Park where impressive bronze sculptures can be viewed. You’ll also see City Hall, the waterfront and the Holmenkollen Ski Jump. Thon Opera Hotel (B)
Day 8
Oslo/Overnight Cruise.
Enjoy a morning at leisure to explore at your own pace. You may visit the Viking Ship Museum where you can see the remains of well-preserved old wooden ships. Later, transfer to the pier located on the Oslo Fjord and embark on a comfortable overnight cruise, sailing through the North Sea. Day 9
Copenhagen (Denmark).
Enjoy the splendid early morning scenery as you sail into port of Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital and delightful cultural center. An included guided city tour features Hans Christian Andersen’s renowned Little Mermaid, Christiansborg Palace – seat of the parliament and Nyhavn, world famous and recently restored district. The afternoon is at leisure to explore on your own. A brief walk from your hotel brings you to Stroget, a lively pedestrian street with delightful atmosphere, tempting shopping and abundant cafes. Day 10
Copenhagen.
Today is at leisure for independent exploration. Your hotel is centrally located in the lively and colorful city center, bustling with parks, cafes, restaurants and shops. You may also join an optional “Castle of North Zealand” tour. This evening we suggest a visit to renowned Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen’s famous amusement park. (B)
Day 11
Copenhagen/Helsinki (Finland).
Today fly to the charming harbor city of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. On an included guided afternoon tour see Senate Square surrounded by 19-century classical buildings and the colorful Market Square. Scandic Grand Marina Hotel (B)
Day 12
Helsinki/USA or St. Petersburg.
Morning at leisure to explore independently. Later today, fly back to the USA or continue your exciting journey with an extension to St. Petersburg, Russia. (B)

Day 12 Extension
Helsinki/St. Petersburg (Russia).
This morning board a high-speed train for the comfortable 3.5 hour ride through the scenic Finnish countryside en route to St. Petersburg, Russia. One of Europe’s most magnificent cities, St. Petersburg, the former capital of Czarist Russia, was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great. Its architecture, natural beauty and rich culture are unparalleled! After arriving at the city-center train station, you’ll be met by a local expert and enjoy a guided city tour. Drive along the famous Nevsky Prospect and see Peter and Paul’s Fortress, St. Issac Cathedral and other highlights. Day 13 Extension
St. Petersburg: Hermitage/Peterhof Palace.
This morning enjoy an included guided excursion outside the city to visit Peterhof Palace, the summer residence of the Czar. It was built to rival Versailles and is surrounded by magnificent gardens. Upon returning to St. Petersburg this afternoon discover one of its most celebrated treasures, the famous Hermitage, located at the Winter Palace. A local expert will guide you through the Hermitage’s priceless art collection. The evening is free and you may wish to attend a cultural performance. (B)
Day 14 Extension
St. Petersburg.
Today is at leisure to explore at your own pace from your conveniently located upscale hotel. This evening join your fellow travelers for a festive farewell dinner. (B,D)
Day 15 Extension
St. Petersburg/New York.
Morning transfer to the airport for your flight back to the USA. Your memorable journey concludes as you arrive New York later today. (B)

To enhance your visit to Scandinavia (& St. Petersburg, if applicable), you will be offered several optional tours. Rates are in US Dollars and are based on a minimum number of participants. You’ll need to decide while in Stockholm which of the tours you want to participate in and pay your Tour Director at the beginning of your trip. Payment is by cash only (U.S. dollars).  Credit cards are not accepted. Optional tours are non-refundable once reserved and paid for.  Additional optional tours may be added for your enjoyment, and the optional tours listed below may not be available on all departure dates.

The Fjords
Morning Hardanger Fjord & Fruit Farm Excursion (approx. $40 per person)
Enjoy a memorable morning excursion to explore spectacular Hardanger Fjord area. You’ll journey along the winding road along the panoramic fjord en route to Bleietunt Farm. This fruit growing farm has been owned and run by the same local family for generations. Here, learn from a member of the family about the area and familiarize yourself with the local life as you enjoy an easy walk around the farm and it’s cozy wine cellar where hard cider is made from locally grown apples. Enjoy a tasting of seasonal fruits and juice as you savor the picture perfect setting and warm hospitality. Later, return to your hotel in Lofthus via the scenic route.  Please note: This optional excursion requires a minimum of 20 participants to operate.

St. Petersburg Ext.
Evening Folklore Performance at Nikolaevsky (Approx. $90 per person)
Enjoy a splendid and colorful Russian folk show “Feel Yourself Russian” at one of St. Petersburg’s architectural masterpieces, the lavish and historic Nikolaevsky Palace. The spectacular folklore show is composed of the some of Russia’s best folk ensembles and is held in the Palace’s Concert Hall which used to be the formal ballroom. You’ll be dazzled with amazing dances of Cossacks, Russian folk orchestra playing the accordion, balalaika as well as other exotic musical instruments, lyrical round dances and heartfelt songs that will acquaint you with the cultural traditions of Russia. During the intermission you’ll be served a drink of your choice and traditional Russian snacks. Roundtrip transfers with a guide from your hotel to Nikolaevsky Palace are included. Please note: This optional excursion requires a minimum of 15 participants to operate.

St. Petersburg Ext.
Catherine Palace Excursion (Approx. $70 per person)
Travel outside St. Petersburg to Tsarskoe Selo, the main summer residence of the Russian royal family, famous for its magnificent Catherine’s Palace and park. The other name of the town is Pushkin in honour of the renowned Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. Enjoy a guided visit to the main landmark of Pushkin, Catherine’s Palace, featuring splendid interiors designed by eminent architects. The collections of the palace contain a large number of precious works of art, such as furniture, porcelain, statues and canvases including the personal belongings of Russian emperors and members of their families. One of the most remarkable interiors of Catherine’s Palace is the Amber Room. During the palace excursion you will get to know about the Amber Room’s mysterious history and see its fully restored interiors. You will enjoy the result of restoration works performed by skilled masters, who needed all their professionalism to recreate the eighth wonder of the world. The palace lies at the centre of a large architectural and park ensemble that you’ll also have an opportunity to view. Return to St. Petersburg later today. Please note: This optional excursion requires a minimum of 15 participants to operate.

Trip Preparation

FLIGHT INFORMATION

Your flights from New York’s JFK Airport to Scandinavia and back are on Finnair. Your flight is scheduled to depart at 5:30PM. We recommend that you check-in 3 ½ hours before departure. Your return flight is scheduled to arrive back to JFK at about 4PM. Please make sure to allow sufficient time for clearing immigration and customs if you are planning a connecting flight.  We recommend at least 3 ½ hours.  Please keep in mind that flight schedules are always subject to change.

ADVANCE SEAT ASSIGNMENT

Actual seat assignment will be provided at the airport. You may call Finnair (800-950-5000) two weeks before the departure and provide them with your AAdvantage number. Please note that smarTours is not involved in either your seat assignment or in the crediting of miles. It is between you and the airlines! Also note, mileage accrual eligibility is subject to change without prior notice.

PASSPORT AND VISA INFORMATION

You must be in possession of a passport valid for at least 6 months after the date of travel. U.S. passport holders do not require a visa to enter the Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland).  If you are taking the St. Petersburg extension, U.S. citizens require a visa to enter Russia.  Non U.S. citizens should check with the respective consulates of the countries visited on this tour as to the most current visa requirements. Since obtaining a visa directly from the Russian consulate requires an invitation letter (which we will secure), we have arranged for “CIBT” to facilitate the visa process for you. We suggest that you apply for your Russia visa 60 to 45 days before departure. Please remember that it is your responsibility to obtain the necessary travel documents before the trip. 

TICKETS AND FINAL DOCUMENTS

Your airline tickets along with final instruction and some additional travel tips will be sent to you 10 – 7 days before the scheduled departure of your tour.  Please advise us in writing should your address change. 

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

Immunizations are NOT currently required; however, you may wish to consult your personal physician or local public health authorities as to their suggestions. 

CLIMATE

You may expect day time temperatures averaging in the 50’s and low 60’s in May and September, 60’s and 70’s in June through August. Nights will be cooler. 

NON-INCLUDED MEALS AND SIGHTSEEING

The hotels used on this tour have several dining choices from coffee shop to specialty restaurants.  Average cost for dinner (excluding drinks) in the coffee shop is about $30 – $50 per meal per person.  Optional sightseeing tours and evening activities will be offered. Your hotel will accept credit cards for your non-included meals.  

CREDIT CARDS AND LOCAL CURRENCY

Hotels and some stores accept major credit cards.  However, for “street shopping” you will need local currency.  Your hotels will be able to exchange for you cash to local currency.   It is recommended that you bring along cash in small denominations. 

BAGGAGE

Each passenger may bring one piece of checked-in luggage (suitcase maximum 44 pounds) and one carry-on piece not to exceed 18”x10”x8”. We recommend that you do not over-pack and that you take a variety of separates with climate and comfort in mind.
