You will be welcomed in the traditional African manner in the townships of Langa (the oldest formal township) & Khayelitsha (the largest informal settlement). The tour includes a visit to the District Six where in 1966 it was declared a white area under the Group Areas Act of 1950, and by 1982 the life of the community was over.  60,000 were forcibly removed to barren outlying areas known as the Cape Flats, and their houses in District Six were flattened by bulldozers.  Time permitting visit Gugulethu Township, meaning “our pride”, which was established as a result of the migrant labor system. (Ferries depart from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront several times daily, weather permitting. Transfers from your hotel to the pier and back are not included).

Trip Preparation

Your departure flights from New York’s JFK Airport to South Africa and back are on South African Airways.  We recommend that you check-in 3 ½ hours before departure.

Depart       10:30AM

Return        8:00AM

Please make sure to allow sufficient time for clearing immigration and customs if you are planning a connecting flight.  We recommend at least 3 ½ hours.  Please keep in mind that flight schedules are always subject to change.

South African Airlines does not assign seats in advance.  Seat assignment can only be arranged upon check-in at the airport.

You must be in possession of a passport valid for at least 6 months after the date of travel. All visitors are required by the South African immigration authorities to have a minimum of two consecutive blank visa entry pages in their passport. Insufficient pages in the passport normally results in denied boarding or denial of entry upon arrival and the person is likely to be detained pending return to their country of origin.  Visa not required for American passport holders for South Africa. Non U.S. citizens should check with the respective consulates as to the most current visa requirements to all their travel destinations (which includes the Republic of South Africa and Swaziland and if taking the Victoria Falls extension, also Zimbabwe). Please remember that it is your responsibility to obtain the necessary travel documents before the trip.

If you are taking the Victoria Falls extension, a Zimbabwe visa is required. U.S and Canadian citizens can obtain the visa on arrival at Victoria Falls airport. US citizens pay a fee of $30 in U.S. dollars (cash) for single entry visa. If you are planning to join the Chobe optional excursion to Botswana, you’ll need a UNIVISA (multiple entry visa) which is $50. Canadian passport holders should request a UNIVISA  (multiple entry visa) which is $50 (single entry visa fee for Canadian passport holders is $75).  Passport holders of other countries need to check with the Zimbabwe embassy before departure as to the visa requirements. Visa fees & regulations are subject to change.

Your airline tickets along with final instructions and additional travel tips will be sent to you 10 – 7 days before the scheduled departure of your tour.  Please make sure to advise us in case your address changes.

Effective October 1, 2014 children 18 and under who enter South Africa will be required to present a certified copy of a full birth certificate.  Copies are not acceptable. If not traveling with both parents then additional documentation is required. For more information about children’s requirements, please visit the consulate website at

Please consult your personal physician or local public health authorities regarding taking anti malaria pills as well as other recommendations.

South Africa is located in the southern hemisphere and therefore has the reverse season to those of the U.S. The weather is temperate and even during the wintertime you’ll enjoy comfortable temperatures. Average daytime temperatures are in the 60’s and 70’s from April-Sept and in the 70’s and 80’s from Oct to March. Overnight temperatures are lower by 10-20 degrees.

You may dine at either of the hotels used on this tour or in another nearby restaurant recommended by your guide. Food costs in South Africa are very reasonable compared with the USA. Average cost for dinner (excluding drinks) in the coffee shop is about $20-25 per meal per person. Your hotel will accept credit cards for your non-included meals.

Hotels and some stores accept major credit cards.  However, for “street shopping” you will need local currency or U.S. Dollars.  Your hotels will be able to exchange for you cash to local currency. It is recommended that you bring along cash in small denominations.

Each passenger may bring one piece of checked-in luggage (suitcase maximum 44 pounds) and one carry-on piece not to exceed 18”x10”x8”. We recommend that you do not over-pack and that you take a variety of separates with climate and comfort in mind.

Great trip

Aug 29, 2014 by Emmanuil

We traveled to South Africa+VF in August 14. The weather was perfect. Great trip. Jeremy was perfect. Wildlife viewing was amazing. I saw all big 5. The only thing that the next traveler has to keep in mind. It is not a relaxing trip. You have to wake early and be on safari vehicle at 6am. A lot of flights. But this is the only way to see a lot.
