This tour allows visitors a unique journey through the history of South Africa, divided into what is referred to as “The Three South Africa’s”. From the monumental turning point in the Birth of South Africa to the now-decaying ruins of Apartheid South Africa to the townships of the New South Africa. This tour is not to be missed during your visit to Cape Town, as you’re given insight into the greatness of Nelson Mandela and what South Africa has achieved ever since the nation took up his challenge to rise above pain and bitterness. Some of the elements of the excursion may vary depending what’s going on in Cape Town on that particular day, but may include a walking tour, visiting a family’s very modest home and being entertained by a choir. You’ll be sure to experience eye-opening encounters, especially when visiting Langa, the oldest black township and Khayelitsa the largest township, where cultural values and personal experiences are exchanged.
Day 5
Robben Island Tour** (Approx. $23 per person)
Depart from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront by ferry across Table Bay to Robben Island, the infamous home to the maximum security prison where Nelson Mandela and others were jailed. You’ll have a chance to visit the prison and explore Murray’s Bay Harbor precinct before returning to the waterfront by ferry. (Ferries depart from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront several times daily, weather permitting. Transfers from your hotel to the pier and back are not included). Please note: The Robben Island excursion is operated by a non-profit foundation and therefore, smarTours does not book and cannot guarantee space on this tour. Tickets are sold on a first-come-first-served basis and therefore may not be available during your visit. (For further information and to pre-book online, you can go to www.robben-island.org.za).   **  If you wish to visit both Robben Island and the Winelands, then we recommend that you reserve the 9:00am ferry to Robben Island on your last day in Cape Town. After your morning excursion to Robben Island, provided there are no significant delays, you will have the opportunity to participate in the Winelands Tour during the afternoon. Please note that the ferry schedule is subject to change based on inclement weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances.

Day 5
Winelands Tour (Approx. $48 per person)
Join this excursion to the beautiful wine region. Travel to culturally and historically significant Stellenbosch, a quaint town in the heart of this scenic region, filled with wineries. Walk through the town and explore the impressive Cape Dutch architecture. Your next stop is at a wine estate where you’ll attend a wine tasting session, have an opportunity to explore the grounds and gardens and maybe purchase some local wines!

Day 5
Full Day Great White Shark Cage Diving*** (Approx. $148 per person, including breakfast, packed lunch, hot soup and transfers)
Depart your hotel early in the morning for a full day adventure to experience great white shark cage diving. You’ll head east to the coastal fishing town of Gansbaai, where’you’ll meet your crew and go over the day ahead (and safety instructions) while enjoying breakfast. Then, board the boat and head into the open waters where you’ll put on gear provided to you and climb into through the top of the secure cage. Watch the amazing great white sharks from underwater and enjoy an amazing, thrilling experience. You’ll also enjoy watching the predators from the comfort of the boat while your fellow divers are under water. *** This tour operates on the last day in Cape Town, and it is not possible to do Robben Island or Winelands if you participate in this optional activity. Please also note that this tour must be cancelled at least 24 hours prior to departure, otherwise 100% cancellation fees will apply. In addition, if bad weather prevents you from going to sea, you will be informed and given a full refund. If strong winds pick up while at sea and a return to shore is required for your safety, you will not be entitled to a refund. In addition, due to variable weather conditions and variable shark activity, diving may not always be possible and is therefore not guaranteed.

Day 15 Extension
Full-Day Chobe National Park (Botswana) Safari & Tour (Approx. $175 per person)
Transfer this morning from Victoria Falls across the border to Botswana and arrive at Chobe National Park. CLIMATE

South Africa is located in the southern hemisphere and therefore has the reverse season to those of the U.S. The weather is temperate and even during the wintertime you’ll enjoy comfortable temperatures. NON-INCLUDED MEALS

You may dine at either of the hotels used on this tour or in another nearby restaurant recommended by your guide. Food costs in South Africa are very reasonable compared with the USA. Average cost for dinner (excluding drinks) in the coffee shop is about $20-25 per meal per person. Your hotel will accept credit cards for your non-included meals.

CREDIT CARDS AND LOCAL CURRENCY

Hotels and some stores accept major credit cards.  However, for “street shopping” you will need local currency or U.S. Dollars.  Your hotels will be able to exchange for you cash to local currency. It is recommended that you bring along cash in small denominations.

South Africa Highlights & Safari

Great tour. Covered everything you would want to see and do. First class accommodations, transportation and meals. Couldn't ask for anything more.

by Howard on smarTours
Fantastic

Our guide, Ron McGreggor, lived up to his reviews. He made the trip so interesting with his first hand knowledge. Ron gets 10 stars on a scale of 1 to 5. He was that good. The included and optional tours were fantastic. Got to see the big 5 twice in Kruger National Park. Hotels & food were first class. Victoria Falls was awesome, especially from the helicopter ride. Did the walk with lions. Truly amazing.

Awesome Trip!!

Our trip to S. Africa was one of the best we've ever taken. Our guide, Jeremy, was very knowledgeable, having lived through Apartheid from childhood. He was able to present the information little by little so as to inform, not to bore. Our safaris were awesome! We saw tons of animals although the big cats hid from us throughout the trip. We recommend the cat sanctuaries and the Capetown cultural excursion and the Pretoria excursion. We were rather disappointed with the Victoria Falls extension. The people of Zimbabwe don't really get the value of the dollar, wanting to charge a fortune for what would cost maybe 2 dollars in the US. I have said many times that I feel like I paid for 3 star hotels and got 5 stars! The food, which was always buffets, was also delicious! We highly recommend this trip and this company!!

Our guide wrote the book, literally

Before we left, I read "The South African Story" by Ron McGregor. It was a good read to get a feeling for SA. To my surprise, Ron was our guide! He knew to go to Cape Town's Table Mountain first thing in morning to avoid the crowds. Gave us great advice about dinning and optional tours. On the bus, he gave us a running commentary about South Africa and being a South African. We saw the African "Big Five", penguins, protea and Victoria Falls. Busy every minute, it was truly the trip of a life time.

by Victoria Morris on smarTours

This was an amazing trip. I have traveled with many different tour groups and never had any tour director like Ron McGregor. He was very organized, on time, gave clear instructions. His knowledge of African history, culture and politics was wonderful. He gave us tips where best to get laundry done, where to change money and many other things.

South Africa Highlights and Safari +Victoria Falls

All South African Airlines flights and flight connections were fine. Tour Director Jason Gresak is a phenomenal director and guide. He is extremely knowledgeable, affable, charming, generous, accommodating, and well organized . His presentations on Mendela and the history of South Africa were very educational and interesting. His daily quotes from Mendala were an enriching way to begin each day. All the hotels were good to excellent but the the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge was exemplary. The tours were very well planned with the exception of the optional 1/2 tour of Hluhluwe Game Reserve, because it was superfluous. The cultural tour in Cape Town was exceptionally educational,l with an excellent guide. Walking with the Lions was an unforgettable experience, enabling us to send pictures that shocked our friends and family. Victoria Falls should not to be missed.(Appropriate shoes would be helpful). To summarize. We highly recommend this trip. Hopefully Jason would be your tour director.

South Africa Highlights & Safari

The above named tour starting on Feb 16 was excellent. The hotels were all good to excellent and the tour director was one of the best we have ever had. The included and optional tours were excellent except for Chobe which was only good possibly due to the time of year.

Absolutely Amazing

Everything was great! South African Airlines treated us very well - lots of food and drink, polite, helpful staff and comfortable space. Our tour director, Jason Gresak, was personable, articulate, well informed and well organized. His daily Mandela quotes and breadth of knowledge about the regions we were passing through added immeasurably to the enjoyment of this trip of a lifetime. He has a great sense of humour too!The hotels were all first rate and the included meals were excellent. The safaris were excellent and we saw lots and lots of big, and small game and birds. The Cat Walk at Emdoneni Lodge was an amazing experience - getting up close and personal with cheetahs, caracals, serval and African Wild Cats unforgettable. One of the main highlights of the trip was the Walk with the Lions north-west of Pretoria. Another unforgettable time - and the brick-oven, warthog pizza was awesome. Will definitely be recommending smarTours to my friends. Thank you.

SOUTH AFRICA

This was the best trip of my life, Jason Gresak was a phenomenal tour guide. He was knowledgeable, personable, patient, super organized and went above and beyond in many ways. The hotels, meals, buses (and drivers), sights and experiences far exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend this tour with smartours!

by Elaine on smarTours

This was our first Trip with Smartours and it was fabulous.
Jason was our wonderful tour guide . He was very knowledgeable and presented
everything in a clear, interesting way, and he was very engaging , and accommodating .
The hotels were all acceptable. Protea Kruger Gate was lovely with a very nice staff. Our favorite hotel was Victoria Fall Safari club which we were upgraded to.
They have exceptionally beautiful rooms with views and wonderful amenities . The staff was very accommodating . I particularly remember Tandy and Patience who c ould not do enough for us. The hotel offered free laundry service which I really appreciated.
The highlights for us were the optional cultural tour in Cape Town, the safaris, the optional lion walk and elephant experience in Victoria Falls.
I would have preferred to have had early morning and /or late afternoon safaris rather than mid day.
All in all, a great trip!
